If you're a Bank of America customer, you've probably noticed that the site, which promises "24/7 access," is "temporarily unavailable."
We noticed some sluggishness this morning but it came to a grinding halt late this morning on the West Coast, early afternoon on the East Coast.
On its website company overview, BofA notes that its online banking has 29 million active users.
BofA spokesperson Tara Burke explained the problem happened as a result of a "routine update over the weekend." Because of proprietary reasons, she said she couldn't elaborate, but did make it clear that it "did not impact customer information or security." Asked directly about hacking — a la Anonymous or the WikiLeaks backlash that struck Visa, MasterCard and Amazon — Burke said there was none of that.
She said there were "intermittent interruptions" that affected customers, beginning at about 1:30 EST. She said that mobile and text banking were still working.
Burke said the bank is "hoping to resolve this as quickly as possible."
They also need to work the damage control, fast. Twitter and blogs have already blown up with talk of Anonymous and hackers, who have not let the fact that this is bill day (the first of the month) escape them.

B of A had been down since at least early this morning for me on the west coast and B of A was very slow (hours late) to change its web page to reflect that. The national news orgs were also slow to notice - just saw local news websites reporting in other areas of the U.S. (not my local). My mortgage payment is scheduled to go through today - don't know yet whether that will be late or is affected.
What a shame. It couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of a#$holes.
I tried to access it today and noticed it was down around 10AM. Fortunately my monthly bills are already paid.
It was slow and hiccuping beginning yesterday, which fits with the "weekend" timeframe...we sure have come to depend on this form of banking, haven't we? Which reminds me; where is my checkbook? Have to pay the gardener this week!
They have until tomorrow, or I will begin moving my accounts.
This is old news to me. Had problems yesterday (2/28/11) with their online banking. Took over an hour to access my accounts. When I tried calling I of course got stuck in the call tree from hell which eventually hung up on me. Tried to find information online to see what was going on. Found nothing for yesterday, but a long list of issues over the last several months.
That is why I am old school, write out a check, post a stamp, and send it in the mail. This way I can hold whose accountable as to who "paid" the bill - myself! Not technology, yet we raaave about it! and glorify it.
The postal 'service' in our town sucks. I think everything gets sent through to Memphis or something, but anyway...I won't even trust the Post Office with a birthday card anymore. At least if I pay online, I get an email receipt right away. With the Post Office, no way to prove if I mailed it or if they lost it or if the company it went to lost it.
no u mean the USPS paid your bill which took their technology to read your envelope to deliver it to a box for a Union employee to disgruntingly grab the box with your mail and toss is somewhere to be tossed somewhere else. eventually possibly delivered to BOAs PO BOX which was picked up by a disgruntled BOA employee opening your mail while txtn on their cell phone, placing your check and statement into a pile under their 2 coffees and eventually possibly into a bag to be sent out to be scanned by technology to hopefully associate the check with your account. which is then entered into the system for technology to access your bank account and apply the payment. So yeah u sure did take it out of technologies hands.... Oh wait no u didnt you put it into at Minimum 5 human hands and minimum 3 technology handling areas where if u had just done your banking online it would have been 1 human YOU and 1 technology access. But yeah you really thought this out and took the safer more reliable route. GOOD FOR YOU. palin stupid award for that thought process.
Not true. We just lost a mailing. The PO couldn't find it and compensated us for it.
hmmm, about the time that Gmail lost 150,000 accounts due to upgrades to a data storage system. how much ya want to bet there was a "critical upgrade" to patch a hole that is, ahhh, defective?
And this is one of the many reasons why I do NOT do online banking.
The other being that you're from Arkansas, which has yet to discover electricity
AR = Arkansas
AK = Alaska
Duh!
And whatever state you're from has yet to teach that the abbreviation for arkansas is AR and for alaska is AK.
If you believe anything that BofA says, you're a fool.
Wikileaks
It wasn't working yesterday and the little lock security thingie would not appear when it did come on, me thinking not an update
Yes, continue using a pen and paper and ride your horse to the bank. Funny!
No problem, my iPhone app works just fine even though the website is down. I would never use anything other than BofA's online banking anyway. One day does not a deal break.
The site was beginning to slow down yesterday, and was all but dead this morning. But, the mobile banking site is working.
Think this has anything to do with BofA outsourcing American jobs?
I hope they get it back online soon. This really frightens me when it happens.
It works fine for me, maybe it's fixed?
Just because we can't access online from the web does not necessarily mean bills are not being paid or payments are not going through...although it is a little disconcerting not to have the access we have become dependent upon at their encouragement.
Skindoggy
This bank is the worst bank in the country. They probably were installing more fees to rip off their poor customers. Got my elderly parents out of this dirt bag bank a while ago. Suggest you all do the same.
Allow me to second that. He is quite correct, they have fee charging down to a literal science and will rob you blind.
It absolutely has to do with the outsourcing of American jobs! This is a much greater threat to the quality and integrity of websites than hackers or wikileaks. I work in IT... I know firsthand.
This whole 'outsourcing' concept is a myth.. nobody is taking or giving jobs away. This is an era of globalization and its about time that technology is shared to establish connections beyond thoughts and barriers. If you work in IT you should be aware that these things seldom happen and when it does it takes time to find a fix in an environment of more than 85000 servers supporting a huge number of customers.. You should admit the fact that this bank has been managing well most of times..
If you still have complaints with BoA, then am sure you will never be happy with any other bank.
This is B.S.!! It was down at 9am, was up for a little bit, and down all afternoon, and it's after 4pm!!! Pathetic!!
I think it's hilarious the way that everyone reacts when a website that we rely on (but don't REALLY need) goes down. Yes it's onconventient, but not the end of the world as we know it. So Facebook goes down, gmail goes down, Twitter goes down, and so on. We didn't even have these sites a few years ago, and we got along fine without them. We got along fine without computers in our pockets and cell phones with instant access just fine a few years ago. Deal with it people!
If you have a payment due today it's a big deal. Too late to overnight.
If you have a bill due today Lonnie, you should have already had it scheduled PRIOR to today, so the site being down would be irrelevant.
B*tches & A$sh01es down? who wudda guesss
The system is up and running.
Is this incident a victim of the 'PinkSlipBot'? Started infecting systems last week. Went viral over the weekend. I hope my account info is safe? Can we blame this one on the Chinese?
